In 2020, the government opened applications for a new Towns Fund, designed to give areas across the UK the chance to invest in projects that would benefit their local communities. In October, Blackpool was one of the first 7 towns to receive a funding amount, or ‘Town Deal’ and received £39.5m, the highest amount received by any town in the first round.
What is the Southern Quarter/Revoe Community Sports Village?
This project will support sport and community activities by creating new facilities surrounding Blackpool FC’s Bloomfield Road ground. Working alongside Blackpool Football Club and the BFC Community Trust, proposals include:
- the creation of community football pitches
- the delivery of a new east stand to the main stadium
- business and commercial facilities
The project will also support the development of a business plan to further regenerate the Revoe area.
How will Town Deal funding improve the Revoe area?
‘Revitalising Revoe’, a masterplan for the area developed with the community, was published in June 2020. Funding will help to kick start the plans by helping to transform the neighbourhood through refurbishment of existing facilities and building new facilities working closely with residents.
It will provide new sports facilities that will help the local community to stay active, improving physical and mental well being. New business and community premises will also provide new job opportunities within the Revoe area.
The funding will be put towards a larger pot, with existing funding been secured from other partners including Blackpool FC, Sport England, the Football Foundation and the National Lottery Community Fund, as well as other private sponsors.
What benefits will the project bring to the local area?
Within the Revoe area, this project will create:
- A new sports facility, open to the local community
- New business space leading to job creation
- A nice neighbourhood to live in, improving perceptions of the Revoe area
- Improved local skills through use of the new community facilities
